Ranger heads the Fleet,
Buzzards Bay August 20th 1937
On a beautiful summers day with a nice breeze Ranger heads the fleet in the run-up Buzzards Bay during the annual Cruise of the New York Yacht Club.
After her successful defence of the 1937 America’s Cup against Sir T.O.M Sopwith’s Endeavour 11, Ranger along with Endeavour 11 joined the older J Class yachts Rainbow, Yankee and Endeavour on the annual cruise of the New York Yacht Club. It was to be a spectacle long remembered as the 5 great J class yachts enjoyed some close racing in perfect conditions on Narragansett Bay, Buzzards Bay and Vineyard Sound before the curtain finally came down on the iconic J class era at Marblehead.
The start of the race was made in a fine 15.5 knot breeze with the 5 J Class yachts making a spectacular sight as they all crossed the line together. In the beat down to the first mark off New Bedford, Ranger quickly worked her way into the lead ahead of Rainbow. On the run back Yankee which had been last around the first mark passed Endeavour 11 and closed on Endeavour which was in third. On the second round in an increasing breeze Ranger continued to lead closely followed by Ranger, Yankee and the two Endeavours. Ranger crossed the line the victor with a lead of 4 min 39 seconds.
