My Process
Charts and Race Reports
Research to Story Boards
The first step in my process is to read actual race reports from Newspapers or periodicals of the time. From these I will find a race that particularly fires my imagination. I will then reread the report and plot out the race in a sketch book noting the key moments in the race. From these I produce a story board of the race using thumbnail sketches with brief descriptions.
Sketches
From my thumbnails I select one idea that Iād like to develop and produce a simple sketch.
Layouts
Working from hull and sail plans I draft out the subject yachts to better understand their deck layouts and spar proportions. This process helps me understand the subject yachts in detail
3D Models
Using the yacht plans and my drawings for reference I then build 3d models of the yachts in my computer
Crew
I then pose for each of my crew and use the photos as a basis to make 3D models of the crew.
Placing the Crew
The Crew are then posed on the yachts.
Sails
To get the volumes of the sails correct I make them out of bedsheets and use a fan to fill them. these are then photgraphed from the required angles.
Setting up the scene
Once the models are made I set up the scene in the computer using my sketches as a guide.
Gray scale study
Colour Study
A quick grayscale painting is done to establish my tonal relationships.
