During June 1930 four special races were organised for the 4 newly launched J class yachts all built to defend the 1930 America’s Cup against Sir Thomas Liptons Shamrock V. They were joined by Resolute and Vanitie two older boats from the 1920 America’s Cup campaign that had been specially modified to race with the new J Class. Unfortunetly Yankee could not join the fleet until the 4th race.
The painting depicts the start of race 3 off Glen Cove on Long Island Sound. Whirlwind initially got the best of the start but was quickly passed by Weetamoe and Enterprise with Weetamoe going on to win.
