Enterprise vs Resolute and Vanitie
Oil on Panel 8x12inches
Enterprise meets Resolute and Vanitie on Long Island Sound during the opening weeks of the 1930 America’s Cup season—a meeting between a new generation and two distinguished veterans of the 1920 campaign.
Their encounters attracted particular interest because the older yachts provided a familiar measure of Enterprise’s promise. Could the new J Class candidate demonstrate a convincing advantage over boats whose abilities were already well understood? For Harold Vanderbilt and his afterguard, these early races offered valuable opportunities to assess speed, handling and sail combinations before meeting the other new American contenders.
The painting captures that moment of anticipation, when Enterprise’s reputation was still being made and every encounter offered clues to her potential.
