Enterprise Gives Chase

Oil on Panel 8x12inches

Enterprise gives chase to Weetamoe on the run to the finish of the second Long Island Sound race in June 1930.

These early encounters were watched with keen interest as the new American yachts began to reveal their strengths ahead of the America’s Cup selection trials. Enterprise had won the opening race, but Weetamoe reversed their fortunes in the second, holding off Vanderbilt’s yacht to finish just over a minute ahead.

The painting captures Enterprise in pursuit—a reminder that her eventual selection as defender followed a summer of close competition, experimentation and determined refinement.
