The painting depicts the fourth race of the preliminary series on Long Island Sound. It was the first race in which the four new Jā€™s, Weetamoe,Yankee, Enterprise and Whirlwind all raced together along with the two older boats Vanitie and Resolute. The fleet had enjoyed three days of racing before they were joined by Yankee on this the final day of the series.

During this initial series it had become clear that the likely battle for selection would be between Enterprise and Weetamoe. Both yachts were very evenly matched and would battle it out throughout the season before Enterprise eventually would emerge the winner and be selected to defend the Cup.

In this the second of two paintings depicting this race Enterprise and Weetamoe are seen running down to the leeward mark with spinnakers set to starboard in the quartering breeze. Whirlwind is seen to the right and Yankee astern of Enterprise with her spinnaker freshly set gives chase. Resolute is seen sheeting home her spinnaker while Vanitie approaches the mark and prepares to hoist her spinnaker once she rounds.

Amongst the spectator fleet Astern of Enterprise can be seen J P Morgans Corsair 3, the largest private yacht in the world and ahead of Shamrock V Sir Thomas Liptons steam yacht Erin
