Rainbow vs Endeavour; Race 1 of the 1934 Americas Cup

 Oil on Canvas 30x40 inches

The first race of the series was a windward leeward course, fifteen miles in each direction, after a delayed start and with a 16mph breeze, Rainbow had rounded the windward mark in a new course record and eighteen seconds ahead of Endeavour. Vanderbilt at the helm of Rainbow was a confident man, on rounding Rainbow was quick to set her spinnaker and  start to race down towards the finish, Endeavour with her inexperienced crew was slow to set her spinnaker, not having it broken out for an additional three minutes, However once her spinnaker began to draw, she began to gain rapidly on Rainbow and quickly passed her going on to win the first race by over two minutes. At this point Vanderbilt knew he was racing a very fast boat indeed.
