The painting depicts the fourth race of the preliminary series on Long Island Sound. It was the first race in which the four new Jā€™s , Weetamoe,Yankee, Enterprise and Whirlwind all raced together along with the two older boats Vanitie and Resolute. The fleet had enjoyed three days of racing before they were joined by Yankee on this the final day of the series.

During this initial series it had become clear that the likely battle for selection would be between Enterprise and Weetamoe. Both yachts were very evenly matched and would battle it out throughout the season before Enterprise eventually emerged the winner and be selected to defend the Cup.

Both yachts are depicted on port tack, Enterprise fourth from left and Weetamoe fifth from left. Astern of Enterprise can be seem (left to right) Resolute, Yankee and Vanitie which has just tacked to starboard to find cleaner wind off the Long Island shore. To windward off Weetamoe we see Whirlwind on the extreme right. The yachts are beating to the finish which Weetamoe would cross first closely followed by Enterprise.
